Odessa catacombs and Museum of Partisan Glory

 

Odessa underground tunnels (catacombs) were created nearly 200 years ago during mining of building materials that were used to build the city. Currently it is the maze of 2,500 kilometers with hundreds of entrances, exits, caves, and tunnels. During the World War II, in 1941, when German and Romanian army occupied Odessa during the war, the Soviet Military headquarters gave the order to organize the partisan resistance. And Odessa catacombs were chosen as the camp for the unit of partisans. The provisions and weapons was enough there so the unit could stay underground for half a year. The partisan unit was fighting with nazi and Romanian army during all the period of occupation. You'll walk in underground tunnels, where conditions of partisan camp are reconstructed and will listen to the history of struggle.

The history of Opera and Ballet theater started with the history of Odessa, it was built in 1809. February 10, 1810 it accepted first visitors and the first performance took place there. But, unfortunately, the theater burned down in fire in 1873. And in 1887 the theater was built again in the style of Venice Baroque, which was the main architecture style of the end of 16th to the middle of 18th century. On the outside the Theater is decorated by the numerous sculptures reflecting the sketches of different performances and compositions.The theater inside has amazing decorations and golden ornaments. Each detail of the inside decoration is the masterpiece of art. No doubts, the most beautiful part of the theater is the main hall. The stage has 500 square feet in size. The hall has unique acoustics, which makes possible to hear even whisper from the stage at any place in the hall

Belgorod-Dnestrovski is located 80 kilometers off Odessa. It was founded in th 6th century (1400 years ago), and is the same ancient as Rome, Athens, and Jerusalem. During its long history the fort was occupied by Huns, Bulgarians, Tatars, Moldovans, Romanians, and Turks. The Belgorod Dnestrovski Fort occupies around 1.5 miles, and is one of the most ancient and valuable masterpiece of ancient architecture. The Fort as you will see it, was built to defend the Moldova Kingdom of invasion of Turks Empire army. In the left of entrance to the fort, there is a Prison tower, that had metallic ring pasted in the wall to hold the chain that prisoners were chained to. At the left side of the fort there is Management Tower, The headquarters of Fort garrison. The third tower, located at the opposite side, and connected by the wall with Prison Tower, was used as Treasury tower, but, unfortunately, nowadays you can see just part of it. At the North wall of the Citadel, between two towers, you will see the ruins of ceramic water supply system and water pull for keeping the fresh water. The Main Gates at the entrance to the Fort is one more masterpiece of ancient architecture. It has the wood suspension bridge that could be hang on in case of enemy attack. This is just a part of what you can see and hear about this ancient and vast place that combined many cultures and eras.

Shabo is ancient cellars of 10 000 sqare meters. Huge storehouses are located on three levels: zero level, 5 meters-under level and 9 meters-under level. A special attention should be paid to unique Herris cellar. Dry Herris is rare wine. In Shabo the secrets of its creating are passed across the generations. Very famous is so-called "Royal cellar" which was created by French settlers more than 200 years ago.
